FAQs for Savour Kilkenny exhibitors

Many thanks for all the enquiries we have received in relation to exhibiting at the two-day event on the Parade Plaza in Kilkenny city during the festival.

We've put together an FAQ sheet which we hope will answer some of the questions you might have. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any others.

*What's different about Savour Kilkenny this year?

The Festival is taking a major leap this year in terms of scale, publicity and national profile.  At its heart will be a major event on the Parade Plaza in Kilkenny city in a stunning location with Kilkenny Castle as a backdrop.

*What exactly is the event on the Parade Plaza?

This is a huge event on the Parade Plaza incorporating an open-air market, a Forgotten Skills Pavilion and a Savour Marquee. Throughout the weekend there will be competitions, cookery demonstrations (by local chefs along with Kevin Dundon and Catherine Fulvio), workshops, fun events and street entertainment. We provide 3m X 3m stalls for every participant and can provide electricity if required.  The open-air market will run on Saturday and Sunday only.

*Can anything be done to accommodate smaller producers?

Artisan producers are essential to our food culture and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to participate.  We will take details of any smaller producers wishing to participate and, where possible, we will consider any producers who wish to share stalls or do alternate days.

*I am a restaurant/ shop trader and have never done an outside hot food stand before – what do I need to do?

For restaurants taking stands, we recommend that they showcase their menus with 3 or 4 small dishes.  Ideally dishes should be sampler size and cost less than €5 per portion.  This is JUST a suggestion, however and we are happy for resturants to come forward with suggestions. Following receipt of a booking form/ payment, our Production manager will contact stallholders – where possible within 10 working days of receipt to discuss hot food preparation requirements. Note that although your establishment may be HSE registered, you will need to register your stall with the HSE.    We have the relevant forms and can make these available on request.  We are working in cooperation with the Environmental Health officer to ensure this process runs as smoothly as possible

*Can I pick my stall/ patch?

In principle, we cannot allocate stalls on request.  We plan to group stalls according to power requirements and broadly according to type of food.

*Will I get a receipt?

Following receipt of payment, a VAT invoice will be issued – usually within 10 working days of a cheque being lodged

* When does the programme come out?
The programme will be launched nationally and locally on the 15th September.  After that we will have a weekly PR campaign to promote the event

* Is there a charge for entry to the Plaza?
We will have a small token charge of €5 for a day pass/ €10 weekend pass for adults.  Children under 12 go free.  With this entry, all daytime events are free – 6 cookery demonstrations; 2 major competitions, 4 forgotten skills workshops and lots of street entertainment, busking and lots of kids' activities

Festival organisers are offering Kilkenny food companies priority booking for the food stalls in the huge open-air market which will form the centrepiece of festival activity on the newly developed Parada Plaza over the weekend of October 22nd to 25th.

The majority of stalls are allocated to Kilkenny producers with a small allocation reserved for regional producers. Kilkenny food businesses have up to August 31st to get their stall secured, after which time all remaining stalls will be open to regional food businesses, according to Festival Manager, Claire Daly.

The Parade Plaza will be transformed featuring a tented food village with up to 60 food stalls and a central marquee able to accommodate 200 people for workshops, demonstrations, competitions and events.   There will also be a "farm to fork" experience, lots of street entertainment, and a host of activities for children in what promises to be an unmissable, gastronomic experience.

The cost of a three metre by three metre stall is only  €200 plus VAT for the weekend. “The real cost should be €800 euros but this is being subsidised by the festival” explained Claire Daly.   Where possible the festival will facilitate stand sharing by very small businesses as the festival is keenly aware that we are facing very challenging economic times.   There will be a huge promotional campaign planned around the Festival with a roll out of extensive local and national PR in print and broadcast media. There will  be major online marketing through the festival website (www.savourkilkenny.com <http://www.savourkilkenny.com/> ) and other food related websites and social media and 30,000 programmes will be distributed.

The Savour Festival Committee is also calling on Kilkenny's food businesses to participate in the festival by running an event in their premises or even simply putting on a special Savour menu for the weekend.   The cost of being an official Festival participant is €180 for small businesses and €450 for a hotel. For this the business will be included in the Festival programme, 30,000 of which will be distributed all over the county. They will also be featured on the Savour Kilkenny website which received thousands of hits in the run-up to last year's festival.   Savour Kilkenny Chairman, Ger Mullally said, "We are only able to offer this hugely discounted rate for exhibiting on the Plaza and for participation in the Festival thanks to the very generous grant we received from Kilkenny Leader Partnership and sponsorship from Glanbia, Pallas Foods and Failte Ireland. It's a fantastic opportunity for Kilkenny food businesses and for Kilkenny itself and we hope everyone will get behind this hugely exciting event."

The Festival has grown in strength to strength over the last four years and is now regarded as one of  Ireland's biggest food events bringing visitors on a fun, fascinating and future-focused journey from farm to fork.   Set against the dramatic backdrop of Kilkenny Castle, visitors to the Parade Plaza will be able to taste and buy the best of local and regional produce while street performers, musicians, and face-painters will provide the sights and sounds.

Visitors to the food marquee will be able to experience the journey from farm to fork through a variety of events for all the family from wine tastings, food talks and cookery demonstrations to workshops on apple-pressing, cheese-making and other artisan skills to fun events such as a local celebrity Ready Steady Cookoff.

Savour Kilkenny is about celebrating the whole of Kilkenny’s food heritage and family events will be held in Castlecomer, Thomastown and Callan. The festival will also showcase the newly formed Kilkenny Food Trail which has 38 members throughout the county

There will be a strong focus in this year’s programme on the next generation of food-lovers with a Young Producers Food market, a Ready Steady Cook challenge, a Young Chefs competition, fun family lunches, quirky cupcake icing, healthy lunchboxes and much more. The festival will also be liaising with local heritage, arts and crafts organisations to bring a truly creative edge to the event.

The full programme of events will be launched in early September.   Anyone interested in booking a stall or getting involved contact Festival Manager: Claire Daly, 086 021 7465, or claire.daly@savourkilkenny.com

A little taste of this year’s jam-packed festival programme (make sure to save the date!)

We're so excited about this year's Savour Kilkenny programme. Due to a generous grant from Leader and support from Failte Ireland and Glanbia, this year's event will be significantly bigger.

It's all about showcasing what is wonderful about Kilkenny food to the world as well as championing a movement within Kilkenny to support more of our own local produce.

So here goes, a mouth-watering preview of this year's festival:

TENTED FOOD VILLAGE ON THE PARADE PLAZA

The majestic walls of 13th century Kilkenny Castle will form the backdrop for this spectacular event on the Parade Plaza in the heart of the historic city of Kilkenny. The Plaza will be filled with stalls where you can taste and buy the very best of food from Kilkenny producers, restaurants, hotels, cafes and chefs. It is, quite literally, a chance to savour Kilkenny's heritage, culture and personality through its food. Small, affordable tasting plates will be available for you to buy and enjoy as you wander through the stalls. In the heart of the food village will be a large, comfortable marquee hosting workshops, cookery demonstrations by celebrity chefs, tastings and entertainment. This is an event for all the family and there will be lots of free fun entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

A FLAVOUR OF SAVOUR

Kilkenny's eateries will come alive throughout city and county with creative events such as artisan tastings, cookery demonstrations and fun entertainment. Last year's festival featured a Producers' Dinner, Mediaeval Banquet, Paella Parties, Wine Tastings, Sustainability talks, Thai cooking, Pizza making and much more. Who knows what our chefs are cooking up for this year?!… Stay in touch with us on Facebook and Twitter and we will announce the Flavour of Savour programme later in the summer.

KID'S PROGRAMME

A Young Producers Foodmarket, a Ready Steady Cook challenge, a Young Chefs competition, fun family lunches, quirky cupcake icing, healthy lunchboxes and much more.. We'll have loads to do for all ages from tots to teenagers in a covered venue with lots of free entertainment in the heart of the city.

COUNTY FOOD TRAIL

This year saw the launch of the fabulous Kilkenny Food Trail. Launched by RTE's John Murray in the magnificent Set Theatre in Kilkenny, this is a coming together of 40 food producers throughout the county. Savour Kilkenny will work closely with Kilkenny Food Trail to create exciting events throughout city and county where you can explore how and where Kilkenny's food is made. We believe passionately that this connection between consumer and producer is integral to creating sustainable local communities.

DEVELOPMENT OF OUR LOCAL FOOD CULTURE

A big part of our vision for Savour Kilkenny is the development of a really unique food culture. To this end we are hosting two workshop events for food producers, chefs and tourism businesses. The first will explore our local food culture, dipping all the way back to medieval times to discover what food we have eaten in Kilkenny. We hope that this will inspire our food producers and chefs to draw inspiration from our heritage and natural landscape to create a food culture that is very unique to Kilkenny. The second event is about looking at the future of food, understanding how consumer demands are evolving, particularly among the tourist market.

AND THAT'S NOT ALL…

This is just a sneak peek at what is planned for Savour Kilkenny 2010. We'll be tying in with local heritage, arts and crafts organisations to bring a truly creative edge to the festival. After all, Savour Kilkenny is a festival of our local food culture and we want to create a uniquely Kilkenny experience for you.

Do stay in touch with us, we'd love to see you over the October Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate all that is wonderful about Kilkenny food!

Kilkenny’s Ryelands House is nominated one of Ireland’s top 6 Cookery Schools at Irish Restaurant Awards

Congratulations to Anne Neary of Ryelands House Cookery School which was nominated one of Ireland's top 6 cookery schools at the recent Irish Restaurant Awards.

Anne has a very strong food ethos,  always using locally sourced, great quality ingredients. Much of the food used at Ryeland House is grown on their own home farm,  neighbouring farms or is produced in Kilkenny by skilled artisan food makers. All the eggs used in their cooking come from their own free range hens, so guests may well be sent out with a basket to collect them for the cookery classes!

Just before Christmas last year, Anne published her first cookery book, A Country Kitchen, which is available to purchase from her website.

Anne has been a committe member of Savour Kilkenny since it was established in 2006. Her passion for great food and her vocation as an educator have been instrumental to the ethos of the festival. We're delighted to see her receive this well deserved recognition!
